{Your Healthiest Holidays} Tip 3: Never Come Hungry

The holidays are upon us! In this month’s series by Certified Nutritional Therapist Jessica Biber of Taste of Health, we’re sharing a weekly bite-size tip to navigate the holidays healthfully so you can be your most nourished, social and confident self.

Picture this: it’s 6 p.m. You worked late after an unusually busy day. You barely had time for lunch, so you took a few bites here and there throughout the day. You’re absolutely ravenous but you have nothing to eat at home, so you have to run by the grocery store on the way. About just how likely are you to want to eat everything in sight? The chances are pretty high.

The same goes for any holiday event you come hungry too. Sugary desserts and processed baked goods that you might otherwise pass on are more likely to look even more delicious when you’re hungry. Enter this week’s tip: when you can, have a little bite before holiday parties.

Try to fill up on a few bites of healthy fats and protein from beef, poultry, seafood, avocados, nuts or olive oil so that you feel satisfied heading into the holiday event. You can and should still enjoy food at the party, but if you’re filled up on nourishing things beforehand, you’ll be more likely to make healthy choices at the event — and indulge in only the things you really do want because they sound delicious, not because you’re famished.
